Tello marks debut with goal

With 3 players from the Cantera, Tello and Cuenca playing out wide and Dos Santos sitting in front of defence, Tello, greatly assisted by Messi, got a subtle touch on the 9th minute to score his first official goal in the Spanish League.

Messi on target after a 3 matches drought

Messi was out of luck the whole match, missing 3 clear goal opportunities. His drought finally came to an end, helped by a formidable cross by Alves with 18 minutes remaining. It took Real Sociedad only 2 minutes to reply with goal from Vela to make it 2-1 with a quarter of an hour still left to play.

Nasty injury for Busquets

Sergio Busuets got injured after disputing a ball with a Real attacker on the edge of the box. Maybe the black cat running on the pitch earlier in the match brought bad fortune to the blaugrana midfielder. The picutres look worse than the acutal injury. Busquets could be fit for Wednesday’s clash against Valencia CF in the second leg of the Spanish Cup semi-final.

Villareal CF vs FC Barcelona match preview

Villareal CF – FC Barcelona

El Madrigal, Castellon
Saturday 28th of January 2012 at 22:00
Spanish League

FC Barcelona visits Villareal tonight with only 18 players due to an overbooked injury list. A victory is mandatory to remain in contact of Spanish League leaders Real Madrid.

Alexis and Iniesta both went down with injuries against Real Madrid last wednesday, and have joined Villa, Afellay and Fontàs on the sidelines. In addition, Pep Guardiola will have to do without Seydou Keita, due to his participation in the African Nations Cup. The catalan coach, however, will be counting on the youngsters Isaac Cuenca, Jonathan Dos Santos, Sergi Roberto and Tello.

Mourinho to get the boot? Will he last until next season?

Jose Mourinho is to face tomorrow’s El Classico clash with FC Barcelona amid rising criticism from Real Madrid‘s supporters and players and claims his spell as Real Madrid manager will not carry on to next season.

Madrid are five points ahead of Barcelona at the top of La Liga, but his position has been seriously undermined by the leak of an argument on the training ground between himself, Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas. ‘Marca’, the Madrid-based paper carried out a full report which has not yet been denied by the Madrid manager.

After Sunday’s 4-1 win over Atlhetic Bilbao, the Barnebeu crowd chanted their support of Mourinho, to show their loyalty regardless, but the other half of the crowd responded with booing and whistles in response. Siro Lopez, a Spanish journalist, of ‘AS’, told TV viewers that Mourinho has decided to leave his post at Barnebeu before next season.

Mourinho has been widely criticised for his Real’s negative strategy of fowls, aggressive play and poor form, and they must now go to meet Barca in their homeground and win tomorrow’s Spanish Cup match to avoid yet another clash at the hands of Guardiola and his squad.

Publicly, Mourinho has retaliated and seems to be holding up despite full support from his fanbase. “I’m not bothered by the whistles at me,” Mourinho said after his win over Bilbao.

“It’s not a problem. It’s the first time it’s ever happened to me. There’s a first time for practically everything…but there may come a day when the fans are sad.”

This game however, is one of the most difficult remaining in La Liga for the reigning champions to successfully defend their title. Malaga, on the other hand will be looking to merely obtain some points for a shot at their place in the European Cup.

Malaga CF

malaga cf logoThe Malaga boys have not had the best start to the year in La Liga, but with former Espanyol keeper Kameni under their belt, just recently signed, there may be some hope for the boys in blue, after Willy Cabellero’s butter-fingers blunder cost them the tie with Real Madrid only a short time ago.

Pellegrini will probably be happy to draw with the Catalan campeones, to keep the fans happy as he has been under much scrutiny following his poor season to date. With Van Nistelrooy in attack, Malaga can only hope to shake the Barca boys a little, as Malaga have really struggled to score in the past few matches, let alone enter the other half of the pitch at all. Pellegrini is expected to  have his boys defend as solidly as possible, and only hope that FC Barcelona have a poor away game, as so far this season, this seems to be their only weakness in their gameplay.

FC Barcelona

fc barcelona logoWith Real Madrid currently holding a five point lead at the top of La Liga, Barca have no margin for error. If they wish to win their fourth consecutive title, they simply can’t afford to lose.

Barcelona’s away record this season has been quite poor – in eight away games, the club has only won three, tied four and lost one. This is a record that needs to change; if not, FC Barcelona will soon be out of the title race. With this in mind, Guardiola should start with a similar lineup as at Bernabeu when they faced Real Madrid. With Pedro and Villa both out, Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez and Lionel Messi are pretty much the only forwards that Pep Guardiola can choose from. There’s also the youngster Isaac Cuenca, but as he has not been in the first team for very long and it’s unlikely that he will start for such an important game.

FC Barcelona’s strategy will be possession football, owning the field, looking for gaps in the Malaga defense, and pressing them as soon as they lose the ball. They need to be quick and urgent in their play, something that has been lacking in the away games this season and that is necessary for Barca to bag the three points.

It is hard to predict the final score for this game, as Barcelona have failed to impress in their away games and their mindset may be focused on the next El Clasico rather than in La Roselada, but we in the office reckon it will be a 3-2 win for FC Barcelona, with Messi upping his away game scoreboard.  What do you think?
