Pep Guardiola : best coach of 2011

Right before Leo Messi was given the FIFA Ballon d’or for the 3rd consecutive time, Pep Guardiola, FC Barcelona‘s head coach, was named “World Coach of the Year for Men’s Football”, ahead of Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson, and Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho.

Pep Guardiola

This is the first time the 40-year old coach won the award. Guardiola guided the Blaugrana to five trophies in 2011 including the 2010-2011 Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and a third consecutive Spanish La Liga title.

He dedicated the award to his assistant, Tito Vilanova, who underwent surgery last december, and who became famous for being poked in the eye by Jose Mourniho last August.

A night to remember for all FC Barcelona fans ! Visca Barça !

Sandro Rosell said he wants fewer clubs in La liga

Sandro Rosell said that in Spain, football is going to come up against huge financial problems and he was against selling Spanish clubs to overseas buyers.

“My opinion is that our league has too many clubs,” Rosell said. “We have 20 and we should go down to 18, then to 16. This will mean that all the clubs will be more competitive and we can reduce players’ salaries”.

“It is the only league where TV rights are negotiated individually and some time in the next three or four or five years we have to put it all in one pot and make the distribution the way it is in Serie A and the Premier League,” he said.

“This is something Barcelona and Real Madrid are talking to the other clubs about; we have to listen to the demands of the other 18 clubs”.

He added: “The Spanish league is the second most popular (in Europe), but we are facing huge problems financially speaking”.

“None of the clubs in Spain are in a good position; we owe a lot of money to the banks”.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Osasuna, the situation is not good but it is under control”.

“As for the other 16 teams, some are in a very bad position and I don’t think they will come back; maybe next year they will go to the second or third division or disappear”.

Rosell added: “The most important thing is to reduce the number of clubs for the future and put financial conditions that have to be accomplished, also in terms of people from abroad buying clubs in Spain.
“They are coming to Spain and I don’t like this but it’s happening”.

“They have bought Malaga and Santander and some other clubs; my question is where we go and if this fair on the associations when these clubs can increase capital with no limits”.

FIFA and UEFA and the national associations are earning more and more money, you have the players’ agents and the players earning more money, but the clubs every year are losing more money. Something is wrong with the equation“.

Clubs ‘plan breakaway league’

Top clubs have threatened to break away from FIFA and UEFA and form their own super league unless their concerns over fixtures and finance are addressed.
The strained relationship between the governing bodies and the clubs was illustrated by a stinging attack on FIFA by Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Wednesday, when he called for a “revolution” in football.

Rummenigge said: “Sepp Blatter is saying he is cleaning up the game, but the fact that no-one believes him, tells you everything you need to know. I’m not optimistic because they believe the system is working perfectly as it is. It is a money-machine.

“It is a nice game but it is decided by people who are corrupt. I am not ready to accept the system as it is and I am not alone.”

There is an increasing feeling that FIFA has lost authority, and that its leadership lacks both the will and the means to eliminate corruption.

An ECA board member told The Guardian: “The fact that Bayern Munich, who have always been close to the institutions, are being so vocal and loud about the situation is a clear sign we’re very close to breaking point.

“We have a memorandum of understanding with UEFA that expires in 2014. After that time we can no longer be forced to respect FIFA statutes or UEFA regulations. And we won’t be obliged to compete in their competitions.”

The ECA comprises all of Europe’s top clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan, plus the following Premier League clubs: Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Fulham.
