Villareal CF – FC Barcelona

Spanish League

FC Barcelona visits Villareal tonight with only 18 players due to an overbooked injury list. A victory is mandatory to remain in contact of Spanish League leaders Real Madrid.

Alexis and Iniesta both went down with injuries against Real Madrid last wednesday, and have joined Villa, Afellay and Fontàs on the sidelines. In addition, Pep Guardiola will have to do without Seydou Keita, due to his participation in the African Nations Cup. The catalan coach, however, will be counting on the youngsters Isaac Cuenca, Jonathan Dos Santos, Sergi Roberto and Tello.

FC Barcelona make it to the Spanish Cup semi-final

FC Barcelona drew 2-2 against the defending Spanish Cup Champions Real Madrid  at Camp Nou last night. This was enough for Pep Guardiola’s side to progress to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, as they edged out the holders after winning in Bernabéu 1-2 last week (4-3 aggregate)

Barca went in 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Pedro and a stunning goal from Dani Alves in the remaining minutes, but a second half fightback that produced goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema just fell short for Jose Mourinho‘s team.

Neither side could find the goal in the dying moments, and it ended all square on the night and 4-3 on aggregate to FC Barcelona, who will face Valencia FC or Levante in the semi-finals of the Spanish Cup

Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos was sent off for a second yellow card and FC Barcelona lost Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez  on injury. Alexis will be out 1-2 weeks with shoulder injury, and Iniesta will be out 2-3 weeks with hamstring strain.

Mourinho to get the boot? Will he last until next season?

Jose Mourinho is to face tomorrow’s El Classico clash with FC Barcelona amid rising criticism from Real Madrid‘s supporters and players and claims his spell as Real Madrid manager will not carry on to next season.

Madrid are five points ahead of Barcelona at the top of La Liga, but his position has been seriously undermined by the leak of an argument on the training ground between himself, Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas. ‘Marca’, the Madrid-based paper carried out a full report which has not yet been denied by the Madrid manager.

After Sunday’s 4-1 win over Atlhetic Bilbao, the Barnebeu crowd chanted their support of Mourinho, to show their loyalty regardless, but the other half of the crowd responded with booing and whistles in response. Siro Lopez, a Spanish journalist, of ‘AS’, told TV viewers that Mourinho has decided to leave his post at Barnebeu before next season.

Mourinho has been widely criticised for his Real’s negative strategy of fowls, aggressive play and poor form, and they must now go to meet Barca in their homeground and win tomorrow’s Spanish Cup match to avoid yet another clash at the hands of Guardiola and his squad.

Publicly, Mourinho has retaliated and seems to be holding up despite full support from his fanbase. “I’m not bothered by the whistles at me,” Mourinho said after his win over Bilbao.

“It’s not a problem. It’s the first time it’s ever happened to me. There’s a first time for practically everything…but there may come a day when the fans are sad.”

Real Madrid travel to Barcelona tomorrow to face their rivals once again in the second leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals series. Madrid will be looking to continue their success after their 4-1 victory over Atletico Bilbao in the league. Tomorrow will tell whether Mourinho will be changing his tactics come Wednesday night but after admitting fault for Real’s disappointing 1-2 in the previous leg, we reckon he’s more than busy rethinking his strategy for his next el Clasico.

Will FC Barcelona advance to the Copa del Rey semi-finals?

Note that the question isn’t who will win, but who is going to advance, as even if Real Madrid do manage to pull off a 1-0 victory in Camp Nou tomorrow, FC Barcelona still have two away goals at hand.

Who will qualify for the Spanish Cup’s next round?
