FC Barcelona
and Eric Abidal have reached a mutual agreement not to renew his contract at the end of the season. This coming thursday, Abidal will publicaly announce the reasons as per why he will leaving the club on the 30th of June.

The French player and his agent, David Venditelli, held a meeting on Tuesday 21st of May with Andoni Zubizarreta and Josep Maria Bartomeu, sports vice president. Following this meeting, both parties announced a press conference scheduled for Thursay 30th of May. They will appear together to make the annoucement in front of the press. The left back’s contract expires on 30th of June 2013.

6 seasons with the club

Eric Abidal arrived in Spain from the French squad Olympique Lyon in the summer of 2006/07. He became the uncontested starting 11 left back under Pep Guardiola from the 2008/09 season.  He was a key player in the success of Barça ever since, winning 2 Champions League and 4 la Liga titles.

He was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2011 and underwent liver transplant in 2012. He came back a year after against Mallorca in early April 2013, receiving a standing ovation from the Camp Nou crowd.

It is rumoured that Abidal, who claims he still wants to play for 2 more seasons, would come back to FC Barcelona as part of a staff member when his footballing carreer is over. Abidal has yet to confirmed his next destination for the 2013/14 season. A move to the new rich AS Monaco, where he coul join Radamel Falcao is on the cards.
