History of El Clasico

Club Rivalry

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have been rivals since the 30’s, after the dictatorship of Franco in 1939. During the 1930’s, people showed more interest in their political meetings than it did in their football matches, with FC Barcelona having to tour America to look for funding after the death of their president in the late 30’s. Some players never returned after this ‘rescue tour’ and the club faced a very difficult time with no president and a decrease in club memberships and subscriptions. Since the Civil War, the two teams have still hung closely to their political and cultural views and tensions.

FC Barcelona represent the Catalans, who propose a complete independence from Spain, as a separate state, and Real Madrid represent Castile, the former kingdom that became a part of Spain itself. Both teams are dominant in La Liga (Spanish League) in year out and  it is this rivalry that has became knows as the El Clásico.

Gerard Pique has accused Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho of “wrecking Spanish football”

Lionel Messi scored to seal a 5-4 aggregate victory over Real in a encounter that saw red cards after a rough tackel caused everyone to boil over at the end, resulting in a fight in which Mourinho appeared to poke Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova in the eye.

Mourinho is wrecking Spanish football,” Pique said. “People are looking for culprits but they are in Madrid. Someone needs to get the video, analyse it and say who is to blame.”

“We hope that on Thursday everyone will be talking about a great game of football and not the melee,” added Pique.

“It isn’t the first time this has happened … it is always the same people. Someone needs to sort this out.”

In the post-match news conference, Mourinho accused Barca players of going to ground easily.

Marcelo got a red card because we all know what happens after tackles in certain areas of the pitch,” the Portuguese said.

“It was a spectacular game from the first to last minute. But from the first minute of the second half, and I don’t criticise it because I know people do it, the ballboys hid the balls”. (Barca were winning 2-1 at this point).

“It happens with small teams when they find themselves in difficulties.”

When asked about the incident, Mourinho replied: “I have been polite and played like a man and not fallen to the ground at the first touch. I don’t know who Vilanova is.”

Barca coach Pep Guardiola said: “The images will speak for themselves. This is going to end up badly if it isn’t stopped soon.”

JOSE MOURINHO has been given a five-game European ban

JOSE MOURINHO has been given a five-game European ban for his outbursts during the fiery Champions League semi-final first-leg clash against Barcelona.

The Real Madrid boss has already served a one-match ban, and another is suspended, meaning he will miss Madrid’s first three European games next season. Mourinho has also been fined £44,000 by UEFA’s control and disciplinary body for his sending-off and comments after the first leg.

Barcelona reserve keeper Jose Pinto, who was red-carded after a scuffle at half-time at the Bernabeu, has been given a three-game ban.

Real Madrid, who were also fined £18,000 for the behaviour of their fans, have already announced they will appeal.

The club said in a statement: “Real Madrid CF considers this resolution still suffers from the same defects found at the start of the disciplinary case, which made it impossible for our coach to use his right to defend himself since the exact statements for which the disciplinary case was opened are still unknown.

Real Madrid CF will appeal this decision before the UEFA appeals body.”

Coach Pep Guardiola wants Barcelona to do their talking on the pitch

Mourinho sparked an uncharacteristically angry response from his opposite number after branding Guardiola as being a unique coach who “criticises the right decisions made by referees”.

“We will meet each other on the pitch. He’s won his games off the pitch and I’ll give him his personal Champions (League) for that,” said Guardiola.

“In this room, he’s the chief, the man, the person who knows everything about the world and I don’t want to compete with him at all.” Guardiola added “If you think that his allegation that I always complain about the referees is true after you’ve all heard from me over the last three years, well there’s nothing I can do. Off the pitch there’s nothing we can do to fight that.

“Off the pitch, he has already won, as he has done all year. On the pitch, we’ll see what happens.”

FC Barcelona set to name best side vs Shakthar Donetsk

“We are making a mistake if we play with the Real Madrid games on our minds,” said Guardiola, FC Barcelona‘s coach.

“There are 90 minutes still to play. The idea is to go out there to win the game and try to score one or two goals.”

“That’s the idea we have always had and the one we’ll maintain. Tomorrow we’ll see how people are feeling physically.”

“Each game is a rehearsal for the next but this one is important enough not to think about anything else.”

Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu was not holding out much hope of causing an upset on Tuesday.

“It is clear there is very little chance for us to progress to the next stage,” he said at a news conference. “But we want to go out with our heads held high.”

FC Barcelona would reach once more the semi-finals of the Champions League if they go through the quarter-finals stage against Shakhtar Donetsk, and they may face arch-rivals Real Madrid in the semi-finals for another Clásico.
